{"id":68,"date":"2016-04-11T16:15:28","date_gmt":"2016-04-11T16:15:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stillwaterprojects.co.uk\/?p=68"},"modified":"2016-04-13T16:36:23","modified_gmt":"2016-04-13T15:36:23","slug":"what-rocks-your-project-boat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stillwaterprojects.co.uk\/?p=68","title":{"rendered":"What rocks your project boat?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Project managers (PMs) think; research; plan.\u00a0I appreciate some readers might not think so but we do.<\/p>\n<p>Honest.<\/p>\n<p>It is also true that projects\u00a0always start with\u00a0high hopes of success &#8211;\u00a0the\u00a0risks\u00a0have been considered; and there\u2019s contingency in\u00a0the budget; and\u00a0flexibility in the schedule; and\u00a0we know who\u2019s responsible for what.<\/p>\n<p>Life seems good until someone drops a proverbial pebble causing the ripples that start to rock the project boat.<\/p>\n<p>Often dropped with good intention, by people who want to help, there are times when these pebbles\u00a0are more like large boulders\u00a0dropped from a great height\u00a0and\u00a0often out of the blue.<\/p>\n<p>Occasionally it may seem that they are dropped with spite; usually by someone with an unresolved grievance about the\u00a0project.\u00a0(PMs of all types will recognise this\u00a0sort of rock.)<\/p>\n<p>And yet while causing the biggest splash these boulders\u00a0can also be the easiest to manage, simply by pouring the oil of talk over the now stormy waters.<\/p>\n<p>While many project managers pride themselves in their communication skills \u2013 emails, reports, PowerPoint presentations, etc., \u2013 for me it is the ability to talk to people, whether face-to-face or on the phone, that\u00a0is key to being a project manager and probably the most important and best way of resolving issues.<\/p>\n<p>So to all PMs, remember to show a human face to your project. \u00a0It\u2019ll be smoother sailing all round \u00a0for your project boat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Project managers (PMs) think; research; plan.\u00a0I appreciate some readers might not think so but we do.
